Reading Response 4

Feb 6, 2022

Going through the Pine Point project, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the story. A pre planned town completely disappearing once its purpose had been fulfilled. I couldn’t understand why it would be wiped from history, instead of growing. Especially after learning stories about the residents and how special the place truly was. The town had a strong sports scene, with year long opportunities to play. Whether it was hockey, volleyball, basketball, curling, fishing, or golf, there was always something to do that had people from all over coming to the town.

What’s even more surprising is that it doesn’t seem like nature ever reclaimed the land once the town of Pine Point disappeared. The project describes the land perfectly: “If all this manipulated geography had a footnote, it would reading something like, ‘They came to work.’” The ground is tortured, a giant natureless gravel wasteland. Tortured by the endless amounts of mining happening in the town during its lifespan.

The entire project is powerful, listed above are just 2 different, contrasting instances of life in the area, further leading to the confusing action of wiping the town from the land. Why did it get wiped? Who decided to get rid of a beacon of life in an otherwise dreary area? Those questions seemingly remain unanswered, or I just missed it when going through the project.
