Reading Response 1

Reading about JR’s work was extremely fascinating. Especially after listening to Chip Thomas talk, it was extremely cool to see how powerful this medium of photograffy (photography + graffiti) is. While the works were usually in some kind of politically known area, they were not political themselves. It was really cool to see how these works took on a life of their own after JR helped them take the first step.

In a sense, JR’s art is human. He hasn’t created anything new, but has instead given us a new, fresh perspective to look at things. I think that is specifically what makes his work so powerful. By visually seeing a new perspective on his work, you can start to understand how new perspectives can teach and help you grow. At the same time that his work was super interesting, I am also interested in his secrecy. While he has said announcing his name would take away from the work, I am curious why he chose to use his initials instead of a false name like Banksy. JR is more outspoken than Banksy is, which is also interesting to me. Why do interviews, accept awards and recognition, if you don’t want to share your name?
